Managed hosting could be among spending increases predicted by Gartner
Managed hosting could be increasingly used over the coming year after a leading research analyst predicted that IT spending would continue to grow in 2011.
Gartner's worldwide forecast predicted that $3.6 trillion (£2.33 trillion) would be spent, with servers among the items that look likely to be introduced as green IT becomes more important.
The figure represents a 5.1 per cent increase on the $3.4 trillion that was spent last year, forcing Gartner to revalue its original estimate for the coming 12 months.
Richard Gordon, the research vice-president at Gartner, said that exchange rates will only help spending figures, but also warned that the future is far from certain.
"Aided by favourable US dollar exchange rates, global IT spending growth is expected to exceed five per cent in 2010, but a similar level of growth in 2011 - while forecast - is far from certain, given continued macroeconomic uncertainty," he said.
The Policy Exchange released a report ahead of Christmas, which said that universities could use managed hosting to help reduce their costs.
