Tablets 'will drive shipment of mobile broadband devices'
Office workers who keep up-to-date with their emails using mobile internet could be interested in the latest predictions about the technology.
According to information and analysis provider IHS, the emergence of media tablets is set to spark a 57.8 per cent increase to the shipments of mobile broadband devices this year.
The organisations iSuppli Wireless Communications topical report forecast that sales of the state-of-the-art gadgets would reach 157.9 million in 2011.
Spurred by the increasing popularity of e-book readers and netbooks, the estimation reveals a significant rise from the 100.1 million shipments last year.
"More than any wireless device, media tablets - exemplified by the best-selling iPad from Apple - appear to be at the forefront in boosting mobile broadband," explained Francis Sideco, principal analyst for wireless research.
In other mobile internet news, campaigners for more reliable technology have argued that next year's 4G auctions could leave rural areas lagging behind in their quest for faster connections.
