Web design and usability 'fundamental for business'
The design and usability of a website are fundamental to the success of the platform, according to one expert.
Tom Stewart, executive chairman of System-concepts.com and former president of The Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors, said that the user's ability to find what they are looking for on a website will be one of the main factors determining whether or not they will return.
He explained that poor design and ergonomics could lead a website to fall at the first hurdle.
"When it comes to the web, competitors are literally a click away and people will not tolerate websites that are unusable these days," Mr Stewart explained.
He added: "If it's not effective - they'll go somewhere else."
The expert also mentioned that understanding the user's needs is the most important thing to consider when looking at design.
Professionals from design firm VPromise recently suggested that good website design will drive online sales, with an estimated 84 per cent of US web users set to make a purchase via the internet this year.
