E-commerce can "improve quality of life"
E-commerce can have a significant positive impact on a person's life, a new study has found.
Shopping 4.0, a report conducted by Deutsche Post DHL, looked at 1,800 consumers who enjoyed online shopping in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
In Germany, nearly half of respondents (44 per cent) said that e-commerce led to an improvement in their quality of life.
Some 81 per cent said that shopping online helped them to manage their time, and 63 per cent said they found it less stressful than physically visiting the stores.
More than four-in-ten stated that online shopping was simply more fun.
Plus, three-quarters of those surveyed felt sure that online shopping has a positive impact on the lives of people who are unable to access traditional bricks-and-mortar stores.
E-commerce is also perceived as an emotionally positive experience.
Around two-thirds of those surveyed said that they felt a sense of anticipation and looked forward to the arrival of a package ordered online.
Interestingly, more than than half of respondents said that receiving their delivery is similar to receiving a gift, even though they have paid for it.
As such, customer service in terms of delivery times and return policies are crucial to the success of any retailer.
Jurgen Gerdes of Deutsche Post DHL said: "The core finding of the study is that e-commerce has become part of mainstream society.
"Increasing numbers of people of all ages are using this convenient alternative to the stressful obstacle course of physical shopping."
Internet psychologist Graham Jones believes that online retailers could be even more successful if they can mimic the sociable quality of bricks-and-mortar stores with the convenience of e-commerce.
"People who go out with friends tend to buy more than when they shop alone," he said.
It is also crucial that customers are satisfied by the convenience and security of how they access their online retailers.
