A digital media expert has claimed Facebook is still the "top channel" for online marketing, despite the emergence of Twitter and the launch of new platforms such as Google+.
Kimberly Maul, an analyst at eMarketer, said the enormous user base of Facebook means the site has become indispensible to online marketers and will make it difficult for rivals to replicate its success.
Launched in 2004, Facebook is the biggest social networking service on the internet with more than 750 million active users.
"Companies realise they must be present on Facebook and are only now getting more involved in other sites like Twitter," Ms Maul explained.
She added that the raft of changes recently introduced on the site will force many companies to adapt their advertising strategies, but said Facebook "still reigns" when it comes to online marketing.
However, the company has faced heavy criticism from some users over its latest makeover, which includes a new Timeline feature that will track a person's online activity throughout their life.
Google launched its rival social network, Google+, in an initial field testing phase in June this year.
Paul Allen, the founder of Ancestry.com and Google's unofficial statistician, recently estimated that the site has amassed 43.4 million users since opening its doors to the general public.
Ms Maul noted the potential for marketers on account of Google's "rich history with search and integrating advertising", but added that Google+ is still in its infancy.
"While it will soon be another social platform companies can use to interact with consumers, it hasn't proven to be a major threat to Facebook just yet," she commented.
"There are a lot of users on the site, but there is a question of how engaged they are."
