Businesses looking to boost their search engine optimisation could look at turning their attention to Facebook after a new report revealed that the social networking website is becoming a "critical player" as to how people find their news.
Pew Research Center found that Google News is the single biggest traffic drive for people looking for news stories, with an average of 40 per cent coming from outside referrals.
Furthermore, the Drudge Report and Yahoo! were also two of the leading news providers, but the emergence of Facebook was the biggest surprise.
With unique news content providing one way to drive target audiences to a website, the social networking page could be the best place to share stories.
"Google and Facebook are increasingly set up as competitors (for) sorting through the material on the Web," the report said.
"If searching for news was the most important development of the last decade, sharing news may be among the most important of the next."
Spencer Parker, of Websense, said last month that businesses are beginning to accept social networking websites a lot more.
