Firms should 'encourage social media activity', expert says

Businesses should be "aiming to encourage social media activity" rather than stifling it, according to an IT expert.

Vineet Nayar, chief executive officer of HCL Technologies, said that research showing that more companies are banning their employees from using social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, could lead to "corporate suicide".

A survey of 2,000 companies revealed that 45 per cent of companies are deterring staff from accessing social media websites from the office, while 48 per cent of businesses in the UK have banned them altogether, reports utalkmarketing.com.

Mr Nayar believes that there are benefits to introducing Facebook in the workplace.

"It is quite remarkable that in this day and age, many employers are still putting their employees' interests as a low priority by not allowing them to use sites like Facebook," he added.

"Facebook is such a popular application that is so widely used for personal and business uses, it makes no business sense to ban it."

A study by Pew Research Center, published last week (May 9th), revealed that search engine optimisation is being driven by Facebook as people share news with their friends.
