IT leaders must prep for 'Post-PC' era

IT leaders must prep for 'Post-PC' era

As companies and consumers increasingly use mobile devices to access the internet, businesses must adjust their IT infrastructure accordingly, experts believe..

David Mitchell Smith, research vice president at technology research firm Gartner, said that the last few years have seen a shift towards a mobile-dominated future.

"With phones and tablets becoming a platform for the delivery of applications and information, and not simply a communications tool, the era of running applications solely on desktop and notebook PCs is rapidly being superseded by a fast-moving, diverse era of ecosystems that span consumer electronics, business computing, fixed-location clients and mobile clients," he said.

According to Gartner analysts, there are three key implications in the shift towards mobile computing which IT organisations need to prepare for.

The first is the ongoing trend of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and consumerisation. Mr Smith said that IT leaders and application developers need to take a multichannel approach across B2B (business to business), B2E (business to employee) and B2C (business to consumer) channels.

"Too many IT departments and end users still assume that only desktop applications are needed," he said.He recommended that organisations perform mobile-only, mobile-first or legacy assessment during application development, and that they implement an architectural and tool framework for the future.

Gartner also noted that consumer and business expectations are increasingly high when it comes to the useability of mobile devices across sectors.

As such, the usual touch-and-gesture interface is being expanded with new features including audio and video channels and spoken command to drive searches and actions.

The best way to ready any organisation for this evolution is to track advances in user-interface techniques and create a road map for short-term, medium-term and future potential, Gartner said.

Finally, Gartner recommended that companies relocate their resources in order to factor in the importance of mobile-targeted online marketing.

Mobile advertising protects targeting mobile devices like tablets and smartphones are expected to outnumber 'native' PC project by four to one by 2015.
