More than 1,000 victims' details released in Met Police blunder

More than 1,000 victims' details released in Met Police blunder

The email addresses of over 1,000 victims of crime were accidently sent to other victims by the Metropolitan Police, due to "human error".

During a quality control safety, the victims' details were accidently inserted into the wrong recipient box of an email.

As a result, the victims' email addresses were all visible to other recipients.

The email was sent to 1,136 people in seven batches.

A spokesperson from Scotland Yard confirmed that the mistake took place when the Crime Recording and Investigation Bureau was conducting a survey to check the quality of service that victims were receiving.

He added that no other personal details had been revealed, and that the people whose details were shared had largely been victims of "low-end" crime.

The Met Police are looking into survey methodologies to ensure that this mistake is not repeated.

Director of privacy group Big Brother Watch Nick Pickles has called for improved sanctions and privacy protections.

"Given how much personal information is now collected and held, it is time for the sanctions to be far greater and real action taken to protect people's privacy," he said.

It follows news that details of an Essex council's entire workforce, including names and contact numbers, were inadvertently released on a website this week.
