Research and customer knowledge 'are vital for online marketing'

Online marketing can be an extremely powerful tool for a wide range of businesses, but one expert has claimed carrying out research and gaining customer knowledge is vital to ensure such campaigns are a success.

Ray Jones, head of marketing and communications at the Chartered Institute of Marketing, urged firms to get to know their target audience as well as the products they are most likely to purchase to gain knowledge regarding popular items.

"[Companies] may want to [focus] research on discovering from their existing customer - who they are and what they buy most of," he explained.

The expert went on to suggest organisations that focus on segmenting their market by concentrating on the most popular products as part of their online marketing campaigns could see the most significant improvements in future.

With the increasing influence of social media, it is important for companies hoping to gain exposure to capitalise on the benefits such a platform can provide. Companies that take advantage of this should ensure their overall operation is supported, while addressing the communities that use Facebook and Twitter most regularly.

Providing timely feedback to any queries raised by customers using a social media platform is vital to ensuring prospective buyers are not left with a negative view of the company, which highlights the importance of knowing who the target customer is.

"Through social media, your customers and potential customers are taking serious buying advice from total strangers, so you had better address any feedback quickly," remarked Mr Jones.

The industry expert went on to advise companies to adopt a simple, clear and easy to buy strategy for corporate websites during the run-up to Christmas, while sticking to best-selling products that are likely to catch the eye of prospective buyers.

Meanwhile, Jon Callas - chief technology officer of security solutions firm Entrust - highlighted the benefits of social media for companies of all sizes due to its effectiveness as a platform for advertising campaigns.
