Retailers 'are failing to reap benefits of Twitter in online marketing'
Businesses have been urged to take advantage of online marketing opportunities presented through social networking website Twitter following a recent study.
The advice comes after researchers from Virgin Media Business revealed that only nine per cent of companies use the website for work-related purposes.
In addition, just one-third of the 500 retailers questioned utilised alternative social media platforms, such as Facebook or blogging, to spread the word of their product.
Phil Stewart, customer service director for Virgin Media Business, highlighted the benefits of Twitter for companies looking to share recommendations with friends and colleagues.
"Since its founding, Twitter has changed the way we shop and engage with brands and, as such, has become a fantastic tool for customer engagement," he added.
The recent FIFA Women's World Cup Final between Japan and the USA set a new record for the number of tweets posted per second, beating the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to the top spot.
