Social networking sites a way of attracting new business, research finds
Social networking sites are becoming more popular with retailers looking to market their business and attract new custom, according to new figures.
Intelligence from Hitwise shows that social networking and forums was in third place in websites visited before retail pages, with search engines and department stores coming in ahead.
Importantly, the sector came ahead of email services, suggesting that social networking may be a better way for retailers to attract new custom and reach their target market.
Heather Dougherty, director of research at Hitwise, said that though the evidence is only suggestive, it does show that websites, such as Facebook and Twitter, could be the way for firms to market its products.
"Visits do not always equal sales, but the increasing share of traffic moving in between social networks offers retailers another marketing channel to interact with potential buyers," she said.
Last month Progress Software reported that 14 per cent of business leaders it asked said that they were expecting a strong recovery in 2011.
