It is "very early" to measure what impact social media use has on productivity in the workplace, according to one expert.
Dominique Busso, chief executive officer of NetMediaEurope, said that despite this, many businesses are encouraging their employees to use networking sites - possibly to market products.
He added that top management generally send out the message to use social media in the UK, whereas in France it is low-level employees that use sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
NetMediaEurope found that 38 per cent of people it questioned in a survey published last month said that they respond to social media discussions at least once per week.
Mr Busso added that the UK is behind the rest of Europe for social network usage.
"It is very early to measure the impact of social media on productivity. Nevertheless, social media seems to be vividly encouraged to be used at corporate level," he explained.
"Indeed, Facebook is used in a lower proportion than the European average in the UK, but still in a proportion of 45 per cent."
