A new competitor is set to enter the tablets market.
Spark, a Linux-based slate, is a seven-inch tablet running an open source OS called KDE Plasma Active UX, which is built on Linux foundations.
Its specifications include a touch capacitive 800 x 480 pixel screen, a 1.3 megapixel camera, two micro-USB ports, a microSD card slot, Wi-Fi and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Experts believe that it is a special product which will offer something that Apple and Android tablet do not: a unique opportunity for free software.
In a recent blog post, KDE developer Aaron J Seigo wrote: "Finally we have a device coming to market on our terms. It has been designed by and is usable by us on our terms.
"We are not waiting for some big company to give us what we desire, we're going out there and making it happen together."
Spark is aimed at those who want to have full control over customising their tablet.
Consumers who are unfamiliar with Linux will be able to download a range of services to assist them.
The mobile device is now available for pre-order, priced at £165.
