Microsoft has 'enormous opportunity' following $8.5bn Skype buy
Microsoft has purchased internet phone company Skype for $8.5 billion (£5.19 billion) as it looks to branch out further into voice-over-internet-protocol market.
The deal is the IT giant's biggest acquisition in its history after purchasing aQuantive for $6 billion in 2007 and Telewest Communications for $2.9 billion in 1999.
It gives Microsoft access to 170 million monthly customers in 32 different countries and a big opportunity to further develop its technology offering, reports the Seattle Times.
Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's chief executive, said that as Skype has become "synonymous with video and voice communications" it has a chance to change the future of the medium.
"At Microsoft, we see enormous opportunity that brings together what people want — data, voice, video, IM [instant messaging], all on a single screen — whether it's a smartphone, a PC, a slate or the TV," he said.
"Microsoft and Skype together will define this future and what it really, really looks like."
Founded in August 2003, Skype had 663 million registered users as of last year.
