Microsoft reveals Windows 7 price-cut
Microsoft is set to hand a major boost to businesses struggling to cope with the economic downturn after the company revealed plans to drop the price of its new Windows 7 platform.
The software giant said this week that the system will retail at ten per cent cheaper than its predecessor, Windows Vista, when it launches in October this year.
Speaking at a conference call on Thursday, the group's chief financial officer Tami Reller confirmed the pricing strategy, which he said makes Windows 7 "very attractive and accessible" to users.
"For the first time, we will have some aggressive offers that customers can take advantage of," he stated.
The move comes as the latest in a series of steps by Microsoft to help businesses and consumers maintain their IT services during the recession.
Earlier this week, the company announced that a test version of its new security software will be available to download free for Windows users looking to improve their PC protection.
The product provides anti-virus protection, as well as anti-spam capabilities, and is expected to compete with existing free services from AVG Technologies and Panda Software.
