NHS records 'might be stored by Microsoft'
Patient records in the UK might be stored by Microsoft rather than an electronic NHS database if the Conservative party wins the next election, according to recent reports.
Media outlets unveiled the plans to scrap the highly expensive scheme to put all health documents into an online database in favour of offering UK consumers the chance to select private companies to do this.
Should this plan come to fruition, Microsoft is likely to be one of the leading firms offering the service.
It already offers a similar option for people living in the US in the form of its HealthVault system.
According to the BBC, there have been talks between Microsoft and the NHS in the past, but the discussions have been about an add-on rather than a replacement for the Care Records Service.
The firm described its HealthVault product as a "personal health application platform designed to put consumers in control of their health information", adding that it provides the opportunity for them to "collect, store and share" their medical data.
