IT infrastructure performance firm Riverbed Technology has announced that it is further strengthening its ties with Microsoft by licensing the firm's Windows Server 2008 for use on its Riverbed Steelhead appliance.
According to Yankee Group senior vice-president Zeus Kerravala, the agreement moves the "vision" of centralised IT and a remote office with "few or no servers" closer to reality.
"Riverbed customers get proven and best-of-breed acceleration that can now run the most common IT platform - Windows Server - for their critical remote infrastructure services," he said.
Under a previous agreement made in August 2008, Riverbed is part of the Microsoft Protocol Optimisation Licensing Programme.
Through participation in the scheme, Riverbed has access to Microsoft's intellectual property, allowing the infrastructure firm to accelerate and optimise its Windows-based applications.
Certeon also joined the programme in November last year. The firm also uses Windows Server 2008 as part of its aCelera software.
