Smartphone and tablet users should consider adopting anti-virus systems to protect them from cyber attacks, a Norton executive has stated.
Con Mallon, the company's director of regional product marketing, said the mobile sector is still a relatively small target for online scams and malicious software, with 163 handset-related vulnerabilities reported in 2010.
However, he predicted mobile devices will increasingly become a target for cyber criminals in the future, commenting: "We definitely see some of the enablers and drivers now being present.
"As ever about all of this, it's all about the money - it's all about the return on investment."
Mr Mallon added firms such as Norton will attempt to raise awareness of the problem during the course of this year.
His comments come after a study from Juniper Research showed less than one in 20 smartphones and tablets currently have any form of third-party security software installed on them.
This is despite the organisation discovering a steady increase in threats from viruses, malware and loss or theft of the device.
