Domains names with .com pass 100 million mark

Domains names with .com pass 100 million mark

There are now more than 100 million .com domain names registered, it was revealed by figures from VeriSign.

According to the company, which runs .com, the number of names in its .com registry rose from 690,243 in September 2011 to 100,540,971 in late January.

It follows news that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number (ICANN) is planning to increase the number of website domains names to as many as 1,000.

One of the reasons for doing so is to "relieve .com overcrowding", as well as promote innovation among website users.

Currently, there are 22 top-level generic domains (TLGD), including .gov, .org, and .com.

However, under the new ICANN plans, users will be able to register almost any word as a domain name.

It will also allow non-Latin language scripts to be used in TLGDs for the first time, including Arabic, Chinese and Cyrillic.

There are concerns that increasing the number of possible domain names so dramatically could act as a lure to criminals.

The Federal Trade Commission warned that an increase in domain names and operators will "increase the risk of a lawless frontier".

Cyber criminals often use copycat names – similar to those of well-known businesses to lure customers to fake sites.
