Facebook and Websense join forces in security shake-up

Facebook and Websense join forces in security shake-up

Individuals who use social media as a means of communication with their friends will be offered improved protection from the looming threat of online security breaches following a new partnership between Facebook and Websense.

Announced yesterday (October 3rd), the new deal will see visitors to the popular website warned against the use of links that could lead to malware and malicious websites that could potentially cause damage to their personal computer.

The international organisation will stop members from clicking on certain links without knowing the reliability and trustworthiness of the destination. As part of this process, the link will be checked against the Websense database to ensure consumers are safe to proceed.

Dan Rubinstein, Facebook's product manager for site integrity, said :"We are excited about our partnership with Websense to provide industry leading tools to help our users protect themselves."

Using the innovative new tool, which could also help a number of ecommerce businesses using the website to promote their brand, consumers will be presented with a webpage with the option to continue at their own risk, return to the previous screen or obtain more information about the potential dangers associated with the page.

Dan Hubbard, Websense's chief technology officer, explained that the company's experience and knowledge about cyber crime will help Facebook users enjoy a high level of protection against threats that could damage their personal computer.

"By providing real-time protection from malware, spyware, inappropriate content, data leaks and spam, we make it safe for people and businesses to use the web," he added.

This news comes after Amit Klein, chief technology officer from web-based security company Trusteer, urged web surfers to take action to ensure they remain protected against ongoing illegal activity taking place on a regular basis.

He suggested that "informing users of the dangers of browsing the web and interacting with unsolicited emails, as well as being vigilant and alert" could help to ensure the number of people affected by the issue is reduced.
