Businesses could look at increasing their use of anti-virus software and firewalls after a security firm warned that cybercriminals are creating threats that are designed to trick social network users.
Dan Nadir, senior director of consumer products at Norton, said that online criminals have found that people are more likely to trust an attached link from friends and family.
This could mean that workers using social networking sites online could be placing themselves and their companies at risk unless adequate plans are put in place.
Research by ID Analytics, published earlier this month, found that Americans on social networking websites are largely keeping their online profiles "mostly public" and therefore leaving themselves open to possible security problems.
Mr Nadir added that there are many problems for companies if security is breached in the work place.
"The consequences can include losing your hard-earned cash, damaging your reputation, or getting malware installed on your computer, turning you into part of the problem as your computer is used to send spam, or host malware," he said.
