Security researchers could see themselves on the receiving end of rewards for innovative inventions following the launch of a new scheme by Microsoft.
Last week, the IT giant unveiled the BlueHat Prize initiative in a bid to encourage the development of new methods of preventing online security breaches.
As part of the reward process, technology companies could receive up to $250,000 (£152,000) in a bid to stimulate advancements in the sector.
The prizes will be given to the participants who design the most innovative and effective ways to prevent the targeting of memory safety vulnerabilities.
Matt Thomlinson, general manager of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group, said: "As the risk of criminal attacks on private and government computer systems continues to increase, Microsoft recognises the need to stimulate research in the area of defensive computer security technology."
A recent study from the IT manufacturer revealed that 87 per cent of cash-strapped parents intended to shop around in a bid to find the cheapest back-to-school items this year.
