Consumers who use internet banking may be vulnerable to a new form of cyber attack.
A 'Man in the Browser' (MitB) malware is able to sit undetected within a web browser and intercept information between the web user and the banking site.
It can then use this highly sensitive data to access the genuine banking website and make unlawful transactions, a recent investigation by BBC Click found.
At the same time, some versions of the the MitB threat can change the information which is visible to the internet banking user, including the payment details and on-screen balance display.
This prevents the customer from detecting that anything is wrong.
Daniel Brett, of malware testing lab S21sec, told the BBC that the MitB is a "very focused, very specific, advanced threat, specifically focused on online banking".
Previously, customers who used internet banking were able to benefit from security devices such as HSBC's Secure Key and Barclays' PINSentry.
These require the user to insert the bank card and generate a unique code to use during transactions.
However, even these measures are vulnerable to MitB attacks.
