Online security could be improved and the threat of cyber crime reduced if nations united to combat the problem at a time when the issue is growing increasingly prominent, one expert has suggested.
Robert Horby, global head of small business propositions at security software provider AVG Technologies, suggested illegal activity could be stopped in a more co-ordinated manner if it was dealt with on an international scale.
His comments were made after foreign secretary William Hague suggested a more "joined-up" approach to cyber crime and acknowledged the requirement for collaboration between countries to provide a solution during a recent speech at the London Conference on Cyberspace this week.
Mr Gorby went on to highlight the added cost and loss of man hours businesses that have fallen victim to cyber crime are left to contend with, considering the price of hardware and software, as well as accumulated lost sales.
"[This cost is] probably due to the fact that they lost out on opportunities while they were sorting out the problems, or lost certain files," he explained.
Research carried out by AVG Technologies recently highlighted the extent of financial loss experienced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK due to their failure to take appropriate action against online threats.
Figures revealed one in six firms have experienced an IT security breach, while collectively SMEs lost 30 million man hours attempting to rectify issues caused by criminal activity.
"The point I'd really stress is that we shouldn't just see this as a government issue for them to sort out - it really needs to be tackled on an individual business level," Mr Gorby stressed.
He called for firms of all sizes to ensure they have an antivirus or internet security solution installed on every device, while ensuring staff are appropriately trained on how to deal with online risks.
