Online security 'should come first in any business'

Online security 'should come first in any business'

Data security and online firewalls should be at the heart of cyber issues for both businesses and individuals, according to one expert.

A representative from the Centre for Cyber Security, which works with police forces, governmental bodies, corporate clients, charities and non-governmental organisations to develop insight and training in cyber security, suggested that online security will be one of the most important considerations for those regularly using the internet in 2012 and beyond.

Mark Dampster, associate of the centre, said that the volume at which data is now produced is getting larger and systems are often fully loaded with material and information without the proper security measures in place.

He commented: "More data does not necessarily make it less secure but the nature of the data - its confidential nature, the location and the context - makes it more attractive to exploit and [provides] a greater opportunity to criminals."

Mr Dampster also mentioned that the fact legislative and operational systems are not keeping their security up to date with the rapid pace of the development of data means that there are more possibilities for e-criminals to target and successfully gather private information.

"Companies and individuals from the board room to the post room need to have data security at the heart of their considerations as they go about their daily business," he added.

Every task done online, including email messages sent and everyday communications should be carefully thought about, Mr Dampster continued.

Furthermore, new technology and the rapid expansion of mobile systems and advanced storage solutions could provide new and unexpected risks to any business or individual.

According to Neil Richards, European mainframe director at Compuware, keeping up with new advancements in technology is integral to business success.

He said that new systems such as cloud technologies could improve business practices and operations on a daily basis.
