Star launches 'additional layer of security for firms'

Cloud computing and unified communications provider Star has announced the launch of a new product to provide its clients with and extra layer of security to ensure data remains protected when employees work from remote locations.

The company's new Activedge Authentication product aims to make it more difficult for security threats to break through the barriers by increasing existing username and password combination, which is set to dramatically reduce the risk of online attacks.

Additionally, the innovative product is set to provide remote workers with cost-effective and reliable access to corporate data from any device, with the move set to protect companies against high profile security breaches such as the Sony PlayStation hack and the more recent Betfair incident.

Phil Harber, proposition marketing manager at Star, said: "ActiveEdge Authentication is the simplest way for businesses to get started and use advanced security measures because we take care of the technical details. This gives our customers enhanced security as a service."

The requirement for improved security measures coincides with the increasing number of employees able to access important data from out-of-office locations. Although passwords do provide a certain degree of protection, the higher availability of company information could render them inadequate in the prevention of advanced attacks.

ActiveEdge Authentication allows users to receive a pass-code through smartphone applications for iPhone or BlackBerry and by text message alleviating the requirement for hardware that could be expensive.

"As more consumer devices find their way in to the workplace we can help to keep corporate data secure, no matter when or where it is accessed and used," Mr Harber added.

This news comes after Paul Kenyon, chief operating officer of Windows privilege management company Avecto, urged businesses to carry out simple steps in a bid to protect themselves from illegal activity, primarily by investing in data loss protection tools.

The expert suggested this course of action could stop individuals from transferring data they should not have access to.
