A US-based insurance wholesaler has deployed virtualisation and cloud solutions from VMWare to ensure that the company is resilient against unexpected disruption.
Houston-based Myron F Steves and Company serves more than 3,000 insurance agencies, and therefore cannot afford to be incapacitated for any reason.
With the virtualised architecture enabled by VMWare, Myron Steves will be able to use backup servers within hours instead of days, and its server failover is now more reliable.
The cloud computing service has also allowed the company to reduce its IT costs significantly.
According to Tim Moudry, associate director of IT for Myron Steves, the company first realised that it needed an IT continuity plan after Hurricane Ike hit nearby Galveston, Texas.
He realised that the company needed a solution that would enable infrastructure to seamlessly failover and ensure that the VoIP (voice-over IP) phones would not go down with the data centre.
VMWare has allowed the firm to virtualise nearly 100 per cent of its IT infrastructure and consolidate its 72 servers down to eight in just three months.
"We know we can switch our business over to our backup datacenter anytime – and be up and running within a few hours. And it costs a fraction of what we paid for the third-party disaster recovery service we used before," Mr Moudry said.
According to VMWare, Myron Steves has eliminated around $400,000 (£250,000) in annual costs for disaster recovery services and saved $200,000 in yearly payroll costs in its IT department.
Most importantly, the service allows employees to work remotely with more than 100 virtual desk tops, providing them access to their applications and data from wherever they are.
The virtualisation of the IT structure also frees up the firm to focus on growth and core competencies while reducing maintenance costs.
