Professional companies with highly sensitive data have been warned that lapses in website security are unlikely to diminish at any point.
Last week, police in the US, Britain and the Netherlands detained more than 20 people suspected of being involved in December's cyber attack on PayPal.
According to the US indictment against 14 of the accused, the criminal act had been carried out as "retribution" for the closure of a donation account for Wikileaks, the whistle-blowing website.
Alex Fidgeon, a director at MWR InfoSecurity, claimed breaches of this nature are only likely to increase because there is an "industry-wide problem", which could put highly sensitive data at risk.
Consumers who use websites such as PayPal and Amazon could potentially have their details compromised as a result of one of these online attacks, he said.
"There is a problem that is growing across the industry," Mr Fidgeon added. "We are becoming more and more reliant upon security assurances provided by these organisations without any evidence."
