Businesses 'failing to understand cloud computing benefits'

Businesses 'failing to understand cloud computing benefits'

A high number of businesses are failing to recognise the benefits cloud computing can provide for their operations, with many believing it is not "relevant" to their business, a new study from global consulting company Protiviti has revealed.

According to results of the report, almost three quarters (74 per cent) of IT managers across the UK do not think the innovative technology would improve their firm, which one expert has labelled "surprising".

Jonathan Wyatt, managing director of Protiviti UK, said: "Emerging technologies and cloud services provide all organisations with opportunities to change the way they operate and ultimately to improve performance whilst reducing cost."

Results also highlighted just eight per cent of IT managers revealed their business is using the cloud for one or two services, while three per cent have adopted it widely across a number of operations.

Protiviti suggested one of the main reasons companies have failed to adopt the service is due to their lack of a clear strategy, as well as unnecessary concerns regarding the security of data that is stored using the technology.

Other barriers preventing widespread adoption of unified communications include privacy, concerns over reliability and availability, along with fears over business recovery in the event of a failure.

Reacting to the results, Mr Wyatt went on to encourage businesses that have expressed doubts about the validity to adopt cloud computing in "low risk areas" in a bid to increase their knowledge.

"Experimenting in these lower risk areas can provide IT departments with immediate savings, and also enable the business to develop the competencies required to respond to new opportunities as they arise," he added.

Earlier this year, the Carbon Disclosure Project highlighted the benefits associated with the adoption of cloud computing, including more efficient operations, energy saving and a reduction to financial outgoings.
