Companies can benefit from cloud computing systems because they provide an IT structure that can scale with the firm.
According to Zach Nelson, chief executive officer of NetSuite.co.uk, businesses which implement cloud technology are able to expand at a more efficient rate.
This is particularly useful when it comes to putting down roots overseas.
"Many British businesses are looking for new opportunities abroad, which means they need an IT (information technology) system and finance infrastructure that can scale with the business and ensure new offices are opened within weeks, instead of months.
"This is an area where the cloud brings great benefits," he said.
Mr Nelson noted the example of daily deals company Groupon, which was established in 2008.
Rather than using a range of different financial programmes, processes and spreadsheets as it did inits early stages, the successful firm turned to cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP).
As a result, it was able to expand at a much faster rate and in a less expensive way.
"Groupon now has global visibility on all aspects of its business at any given time, confident in the knowledge that compliance is being achieved across the business at a far lower cost than before," Mr Nelson said.
It offers services in more than 500 cities and 46 countries around the world and the cloud-based IT system can cope with this demand.
As businesses become increasingly reliant on the internet, cloud computing will become a more prevalent workplace technology.
In fact, firms that fail to "embrace modern, internet-based cloud architecture" could fall behind their competitors and lose out, Mr Nelson warned.
There are many advantages for companies who do adopt the cloud.
One of the most significant is that it can enable workers to securely access the corporate network even when they are working remotely.
With experts predicting that 80 per cent of employees will work from outside their organisation by 2020, cloud will become even more crucial.
