Nearly half of businesses expected to have the majority of their IT running through cloud computing over the next four years.
That is according to a new report published by Gartner, which found that although only three per cent of the 2,014 chief information officers (CIOs) it surveyed had most of its department in the cloud now, adoption is expected to rise dramatically in the coming years.
Reimagine IT: the 2011 CIO Agenda also found that CIOs would need to have the ability to reallocate IT budget savings over the next year and that cloud computing could be a way of doing so.
Mark McDonald, co-author of the report, said that this could see people bringing "truly new thinking to the enterprise".
"With almost half of CIOs planning to move the majority of their applications and infrastructure to the cloud over the next five years, CIOs have an opportunity to reimagine IT by looking at current resources and asking what would be possible if they were deployed in other ways," he said.
In-Stat predicted last week that managed hosting and cloud computing spending would increase to £8.13 billion by 2014.
