Cloud computing 'set to replace other forms of IT'
Cloud computing could take over from traditional desktops in the home and workplace, according to one expert.
Dr Mick Grierson, computing director of the Goldsmiths College Creative Computing Programme, suggested that the new and advanced computer technologies could remove the need for many of the IT solutions currently used.
"You can just rent a server and it'll feed you any applications you wanted - for a few pounds a month. I think that in the future, we're less likely to see traditional desktops in the workplace and the home," he said.
He added that opting for cloud computing solutions could mean a more streamlined office minus large servers. Instead, companies and homeowners can hire a rack which will enable the system and can be kept hidden out of sight.
People are better off investing in a fast internet connection than spending money on large servers that are not necessary, the expert commented. He mentioned that this would also enable the cloud systems to run more successfully.
The International Data Corporation has predicted that the IT industry's next dominant product will be built on mobile computing and virtualisation products.
