Cloud computing will soon be utilised by most companies to get the majority of their IT services, according to one expert.
Dan Sutherland, chief executive officer of cloud computing specialist Carrenza, said in an article for Management Today that analysts think IT will have shifted "onto the cloud" in the near future.
He said that in its early days, the technology was generated locally, but that soon it will be available to individuals and business users "when they want it and whenever they need it".
"Already today businesses are able to buy IT as a service, like any other utility. In the future that will be the norm," Mr Sutherland commented.
The expert said cloud computing could minimise the costs incurred by companies and that it is a relatively eco-friendly option.
David Pratt, chief operating officer at business IT on-demand provider ThinkGrid, said a benefit of cloud computing is that it can be accessed from any location.
