Companies could look at introducing cloud hosting services to allow flexible working after research revealed that workplace absences are costing the UK economy £17 billion per year.
The Confederation of British Industry and Pfizer report, Absence and Workplace Health Survey, revealed that people took an average of 6.5 days off in 2010 due to sickness, compared to 6.4 in 2009.
Furthermore, it found that around 190 million days were taken off last year, leading to lower productivity.
Katja Hall, CBI chief policy director, said that a premium has been placed on managing "longer-term absence well".
"The fit note is a great initiative, which could play an important role in helping people back to work and stopping them slide into long-term absence," she said.
"But employers are far from convinced that the scheme is working properly and don’t think GPs are getting the necessary training."
Zane Adam, the general manager of Microsoft's Windows Azure cloud and middleware, said earlier this week that cloud computing is leading to "faster innovation" in businesses.
