Royal Mail has turned to cloud hosting services in an attempt to cut costs, improve flexibility and partake in "rapid modernisation".
The firm, which has been struggling in the face of increased competition over the last few years, has been looking at ways to streamline the service it offers and decided that cloud services will help reduce expenditure in its IT department.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Royal Mail will now use Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite and provide on-demand applications.
Adrian Steel, head of infrastructure at the company, told the news provider that cloud computing is significant for IT in the future.
"In terms of its importance, cloud computing is right up there with the internet itself," he said.
"It has given us a foundation to adapt and change so, whatever the future holds, we are ready. Decisions are infinitely quicker now."
The Royal Mail currently employs nearly around 175,000 people and its history stretches back to Henry VIII's reign in the 16th century.
