Cloud technologies 'to become best investment in 2012'

Cloud technologies 'to become best investment in 2012'

Next year will be the optimum time for mobile and cloud computing platforms, according to one organisation.

Predictions from the International Data Corporation (IDC) stated that the information technology industry's next dominant product will be built on mobile computing, cloud virtualisation and social networking solutions.

Data from the IDC has shown that spending on these platforms has risen by 18 per cent in the past year alone and this is expected to further increase in the new year.

Frank Gens, senior vice president and chief analyst at IDC, said: "The industry's shift to the 'third platform' will accelerate in 2012, forcing the industry's leaders to make bold investments and fateful decisions. Companies like Microsoft, HP, SAP, RIM and others - including Apple - will face 'crossroads moments' in 2012."

He added that by the end of December, there will be a clearer idea of how companies and large organisations will go about using the new technology platforms and if they will embrace them as expected.

"We should have a good idea which vendors will - and won't - be among the industry's leaders at the end of the decade," Mr Gens commented.

Further predictions show that company spending on IT solutions such as virtualisation will increase by 80 per cent over the years leading up to 2020.

IDC suggested that the high-stakes investment in new technologies for the workplace will result in a battle between providers.

Moreover, the company also predicted that IT spending will grow by around 6.9 per cent each year until 2020 and will reach a total of $1.8 trillion (£1.14 trillion) by 2012.

Spending on mobile technology products such as tablets, smartphones, mobile networks and data analytics will be one of the biggest investments in the coming months, the expert suggested.

A spokesperson for Protiviti UK, a business consulting company, commented that emerging technologies and cloud services provide all organisations with opportunities to change the way they operate and allow them to streamline their day-to-day business activities within departments.
