Desktop virtualisation could increase with tablet sales
Desktop virtualisation software could become increasingly prevalent as the market for media tablets grows.
According to IDC, some 18 million tablet devices shipped in 2010, with Apple capturing 83 per cent of the market through their market-leading iPad device.
Desktop virtualisation allows users of these tablets to access their virtual desktops and files stores on workstations via the tablet, which also allows for touch screen control.
According to IDC, 10.1 million media tablets were shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010, more than double the 4.5 million shipped in the third quarter.
"Media Tablets are on pace to reach shipments of roughly 50 million units in 2011," said Loren Loverde, vice president of consumer device trackers for IDC.
Just recently, VMware announced that it is bringing its desktop virtualisation program View to Apple devices including the iPad.
The virtualisation specialist launched its View client on the Apple App Store for free and is also working on a version for Android-powered devices.
