'Faster innovation' in businesses as a result of cloud computing
Cloud hosting services are leading to "faster innovation" in businesses as they are given the ability to use reliable infrastructure.
That is according to Zane Adam, the general manager of Microsoft's Windows Azure cloud and middleware, who is quoted by Information Week as saying that the technology also provides core business value.
He spoke about Microsoft's new data centre in Chicago, which serves over 31,000 customers through the hosting of applications.
The 700,000-sq-ft facility has around 300,000 servers, all of which, Mr Adam said, are much cheaper to run than if they were on site.
"It costs an estimated $8,000 (£4,897) a year to run a typical server," he said.
"For us, the cost goes down to less than $1,000."
The Royal Mail Group revealed last week that it had introduced cloud hosting services to help it improve collaboration and productivity between its 28,000 employees with a reduction in costs.
