First "split personality" device launched in the cloud

Telefonia has announced a new cloud service which will allow smartphone users to enjoy two contrasting settings on the same device.

Its Dual Persona service will mean that smartphone users in a company will be able to set their device to one setting for private, personal use and another for business use.

Thanks to the mobile virtualisation technology supplied by VMware, who developed the technology together with Telefonica Digital, each person's professional profile operates alongside their personal one.

On each personal profile, users will be completely free to install any applications that they wish and copy or download information.

At the same time, the professional business profile will be controlled by the company, which will decide which applications the user can access and which security programmes apply to his or her profile.

In addition, the business profile will be protected by encryption and can be blocked or erased by the company's IT manager if the phone is lost or stolen.

This should provide reassurance to a number of companies that associate the rise in BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) in the workplace with added security threats.

Moisés Navarro, director of strategy and cloud services at Telefónica Digital said "The Dual Persona service brings benefits to both users and companies; the user can use just one device, for both personal and work use whilst still maintaining privacy.

"The company has greater control and security over corporate information, increased efficiency and cost savings on mobiles, shorter provisioning and incident management time and, logically, employees will be more satisfied; and all this is available on a pay-per-use model."

Samsung Android Smartphones, tested and ready for use with VMware Horizon Mobile on Telefonica wireless network, will be the first handset available to deploy the Dual Persona service.

Unfortunately, it is not yet universally available across all smartphone platforms.

Simon Stanford of Samsung UK is confident that the new cloud technology service will have a positive impact on the business world.

"As the individual-liable segment is growing faster than ever, the Dual Persona service will undoubtedly be the compelling solution to propel this trend," he said.
