Google is planning to launch a cloud based storage service called Google Drive over the next few weeks.
Users will be able to store their data in the cloud and then access it from any location, using their mobile internet devices such as smartphones and tablets, as well as third party computers.
At the moment, it is not known how much data space will be available to users free of charge, it was reported in the Wall Street Journal.
Experts are interested to see how Drive will be integrated with Google's existing services, such as Google Docs, Gmail and Google+.
Drive will be in direct competition with cloud storage services Dropbox and Apple's iCloud.
There are currently 45 million Dropbox users and 85 million iCloud users.
Experts have predicted that cloud storage will become more highly available in 2012, particularly with businesses.
Peter Job, chief executive at Intergence Systems, believes that cloud is becoming more mainstream as users are increasingly reassured against security risks.
