Universities and other higher education establishments should look at their IT department as a "key player" in filling funding gaps over the coming years.
That is according to Jessica Tsai, Ovum analyst and author of a new report on the subject, who added that recent tuition fee rises will force universities to look at their computing department as a "valued partner".
Her comments come after the Higher Education Funding Council for England put aside £12.5 million for introducing cloud computing, thereby pooling their resources together.
Virtualisation could also be used as higher education institutions look for ways to reduce their costs, with technology being the obvious choice.
Ms Tsai added that now is the time for IT departments to step up and use their "ability to manage change".
She added: "IT departments should also step up and voice their expertise and propose ideas and innovative solutions that can help address the challenges institutions are facing."
