Microsoft is planning to release Windows 8 to manufacturers early next year, according to a new report.
Citing a trusted source, ZDNet columnist Mary-Jo Foley said the latest version of the operating system (OS) will be shipped to hardware-makers by next April, while a beta will be delivered around the time of the Build conference in mid-September.
A release candidate test version of Windows 8 will then be unveiled early in the new year, the source claimed.
Microsoft has given little away about the release schedule for the OS, merely stating that it will be launched two to three years after Windows 7.
However, it is unknown if this timescale refers to the shipping date of Windows 7, or when it was first made available to manufacturers.
According to Windows8Beta.com, the OS will run on VMware virtual machines, provided users have minimum system configurations including at least 1 GB of RAM and 16 GB of hard disk space.
