Cloud computing could be used by businesses in the coming year after a leading technology organisation said that firms are looking to improve the efficiency of their IT department.
Research by the British Computer Society (BCS) found that 44 per cent of senior IT decision makers thought that operational efficiencies would be one of the three most important business issues of 2011.
A further 40 per cent said that strategy and planning would be important in business, with many turning to cloud computing and virtualisation to help lower the amount of on-site maintenance that takes place.
Michiel van der Voort, director of international and professional development at BCS, said that finance is a big factor in why firms' attitudes are changing.
"The current economic situation means that many organisations are looking at making tough decisions and strategic business changes," he said.
Dr John Bates, chief technology officer of Progress Software, said last week that cloud computing is a cost-cutting "natural evolution of virtualisation".
