Public cloud computing revenues set to rise by 2014, IDC says

Public IT cloud computing revenue in the US is expected to almost treble by 2014 as healthcare and other sectors take advantage of the money-saving technology.

The International Data Corporation predicts that between 2009 and 2014, revenues will increase by 21.6 per cent to $29.5 billion (£18.36 billion) from $11.1 billion.

When breaking down the figures further, the IDC found that professional services, communications and the media in particular will be using public clouds more.

Ruthbea Yesner Clarke, program manager at IDC's Vertical Markets Research Group, said that healthcare is another sector that will take advantage of the benefits of using cloud computing.

"Despite serious concerns about privacy, current healthcare reform and the rise of connected healthcare will lead providers to the public cloud for specific functions such as collaboration applications," she said.

Neelie Kroes, of the EU Digital Agenda department, said earlier this month that the benefits of cloud computing are now "widely recognised".
