Chief information officers (CIOs) in the public sector are the most positive about the adoption of cloud services, according to a new report.
Research published by Xantus Consulting revealed that one-third of public sector organisations are now using cloud computing, compared with 19 per cent in the private sector.
However, the report also predicted that both public and private CIOs will increase their spending on cloud services and use the virtual infrastructure for a greater number of applications over the next few years.
Almost two-thirds of all organisations are likely to spend between 40 per cent and 80 per cent of their budget on cloud services in five years' time, the study found.
"What is clear is that everyone is looking to use cloud in at least part of their IT estate and that part is planned to grow over time," said Mac Scott, associate director and head of architecture at Xantus.
"In essence, it's good news for cloud computing and it would appear that the public sector is currently leading the vanguard."
The research suggested the cost benefits of cloud computing will be one of the main drivers of adoption for CIOs, particularly among public sector bodies facing significant budget restrictions.
Royal Mail's head of infrastructure management Adrian Steel told the consulting firm that the spending power of many public sector organisations will be capped by at least 25 per cent over the next five years.
"This means doing things as cheaply as possible. The cloud is perfect for overcoming this," he said.
Earlier this month, Warwickshire County Council announced it will be the first major public sector organisation to provide e-mail services via the cloud as part of a trial scheme.
The local authority is working with the Cabinet Office to pilot the use of cloud services within the government.
