Companies will soon be able to enjoy better peace of mind when using cloud technology, thanks to a new development by Sophos.
The IT and data protection company has announced that the latest version of its data protection solution, SafeGuard, will offer the industry's first cloud encryption capabilities.
SafeGuard Encryption for Cloud Storage will automatically encrypt any files uploaded to the cloud from any managed endpoint, providing greater data security for corporate cloud users.
Many companies use cloud services to store and share data, as workers can access cloud-stored files from any location and on any device that is connected to the internet.
It provides businesses with improved accessibility, flexibility and even continuity, as data can still be accessed even in the event that a device is broken, stolen or lost.
The cloud does however raise issues of privacy, as some employers and staff have concerns over where the data is stored and who can access it.
However, the new Sophos product, which has been developed with Lenovo software, is likely to provide reassurance by protecting critical data in public, private and hybrid cloud environments.
Lenovo director of software Clain Anderson said: "This latest version of SafeGuard Enterprise with its cloud encryption capabilities complements our efforts to make our hardware work the best with the cloud.
"The combination of Lenovo PC products and Sophos software enables companies to confidently utilise the cloud to improve productivity without compromising data security."
The new SafeGuard Encryption for File Share will use 'central keys' to make access to privileged files exclusive for certain users or groups.
These files will be encrypted to everyone else on the cloud, and will remain so even if they are copied or moved to another drive, network or device.
Cloud technology is likely to become more and more entrenched in corporate culture in the future.
According to a recent Ernst and Young Global Information Security Survey, 61 per cent of respondents will be using or evaluating cloud services within the next 12 months.
