Virtualisation technologies 'effective way to cut costs'

Virtualisation technologies 'effective way to cut costs'

Virtualisation technologies can help small to medium-sized enterprises become more efficient in their use of ICT equipment.

This is according to managing director of cooler designs company EcoCooling.org Alan Beresford, who suggested that the cloud is to become the best option for businesses looking to reduce costs associated with their online usage.

Mr Beresford said bosses should ask themselves whether they really need to use all their data storage servers and external hard drives used day-to- every day. They should disband poorly-utilised equipment in favour of virtualisation solutions that will help to streamline the storage of information, as well as provide an easily-accessible platform for all employers, he stated.

"A quick look at that and you can think 'well, I can use a lot less equipment and maybe use better equipment and more energy-efficient equipment, and use less space'. Don't solve the problem unless there's a problem there to start with," he added.

The expert also mentioned that cloud computing needs significantly less equipment meaning that a business could run just as effectively with one rack of servers full of efficient, high-capacity, modern equipment which is virtualised.

Mr Beresford commented: "The server, storage [and] communications equipment takes the most amount of electricity - and after that comes cooling."

He explained that the cooling of servers can take anything from 50 to 100 per cent of the actual IT load, so the next step towards cost-cutting and making systems more effective would be to correctly set up a cooling system to prevent over-heating that could lead to data loss.

Furthermore, a successful cooler could save a large amount on energy bills, Mr Beresford continued.

Claire Galbois-Alcaix, senior marketing manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at specialist data backup service Mozy, recently commented that 2012 would see a significant rise in the number of companies opting for cloud computing servers.
