The vast majority of IT departments in Europe and North America are yet to wake up to the benefits of virtualisation, Forrester has claimed.
Brian Hopkins, an analyst at the organisation, claimed less than one in five have decided to adopt the technology, reports Computer Weekly.
According to the industry expert, low take-up of virtualisation software can be attributed to disappointment surrounding some early product releases and a failure from some suppliers to sufficiently promote the benefits it offers.
However, Mr Hopkins is confident that this current apathy towards virtualisation will change over the next 18 to 36 months thanks to higher levels of third-party integration and new technological developments.
"Already, many early adopters are having significant success with recent releases of the market-leading products," he commented.
Earlier this year, Server Watch columnist Amy Newman claimed cloud computing and virtualisation both enjoyed strong years in 2010, adding the market segment will not be slowing down "any time soon".
