The industry standard 128 bit GeoTrust QuickSSL Premium certificates are still great value at £69.00 +VAT per annum. That's all you have to pay to make sure your customers are confident that their transactions on your website are safe! Thawte 128-bit SSL Thawte certificates have the same functionality as Geotrust but because of the additional security checks they carry out on application, they are often seen as providing an 'extra' mark of security to customers. Thawte certificates are £159.00 +VAT per annum.

What is SSL?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a method of ensuring that information submitted through your Web site is secure and cannot be accessed by unauthorised users. When a site offers an SSL-secured form, the information submitted via that form (typically credit card information) is encrypted using a special "certificate key" and then decrypted with another key after it has been transmitted.

When users access a site secured with SSL using either Netscape or Internet Explorer, a padlock symbol displays in their browser windows indicating that the site is secure.

Why Do I Need A Certificate?

An SSL Certificate, or a digital certificate, is an electronic document that contains the information necessary to establish a secure SSL connection. When used in credit card transactions, the Web site collecting the credit card information and the site to which the information is being transmitted must both have an SSL Certificate.

If you either have an online shop or are collecting personal data from your visitors, it is vital that you provide a secure, encrypted connection. Hostway provide both the secure server and secure server certificate needed to support SSL.

A shared SSL certificate is included automatically with all of Hostway's ecommerce plans and while this certificate does provide for secure online transactions, it is not in your company's name. So when visitors to your site choose to view the certificate, they will see Hostway's name on the certificate.
